Michael Bryant writes:

I seem to have a modern edition and
an old edition of K361 for wind octet.
Dan? Would it be worth commenting
further on this version, if there is
something to be said?

Dan Leeson responds:

I have been examining the wind octet version of K. 361 since 1958 and
have come to the inescapable conclusion that it is an arrangement made
FROM the 13 instrument version, and not by Mozart.

Though it was published before the 13 instrument version (1801), it was
created after the larger version. Furthermore, it was not made as a
single work, but two works. The first is movements 1,2,3, and 7 while
the second is movements 5,4, and 3 (in that order).

The first octet does not exist in a modern edition, or at least it did
not as recently as 10 years ago. I have not kept up with things since
that time. The second octet was edited by Einstein in the early 1950s
but not published until around 1975, by Peters Edition.

Bottom line, I don't think that the octet version has anything of
authoritative value. It's pleasant to play, of course, but Mozart had
nothing to do with its creation.

I was at a seminar in Salzburg in 1991 when a Dutch scholar suggested
that the 13 instrument version was created first and then the 13
instrument version, but his logic had so many holes in it that it has
never seriously impacted the history of K. 361. You can read the whole
story in the 1991 Mozart Jahrbuch. The paper is by Baastian Blomhert,
the same man who discovered an arrangement for 8 winds of Abduction from
the Seraglio that got quite a good deal of publicity including a
recording.
