Subj: [kl] electoral court

Bill Wright wondered in an e-mail to Danny, the rubber klarinet man (I know,
I know), what an electoral court was. This is a remainder from the Middle
Ages, when once all those German States, in an attempt to make a steady
peace, tried to unite without loosing independance, and elected an emperor.
Those noble men, that were qualified to participate in these elections, were
called Electors (Kurfürst in German), and their courts were electoral
courts. The title still exists.

So the court of Mannheim was the court of an elector. To my knowledge it was
only a minor court at the time of the Stamitzes, but the Elector must have
been very rich to be able to afford an orchestra of such a high standard,
where the best musicians of the time could be found.

Hope to have helped you a bit
