We don't ever quite know what we sound like...

This realization has helped me a LOT.

remember the number of musicians who say that they do not enjoy listening
to recordings of their playing?

What we CAN discern is whether we are in tune and in time (rhythm).

We can learn to be aware:
whether we are fitting in or sticking out (either can be
*right*)
whether the sound is *resonant* or *sparse*.

The rest of character and sound quality is most effectively handled with
images or motion, or emotion, or with a story line.

"It is all either a song or a dance."
