I've been messing up lately. Perhaps too much non-verbal
communication with myself (i.e.: practicing music in the solitude of my
den) has destroyed my ability to use language in public properly.
Someone pointed out to me off-list that I had misunderstood the
direction in which Terry wanted to transpose. I posted an "ooops"
off-list, thinking that I was doing so in public. It's all past
history now, but I feel that I should post my "ooops" in public anyway:
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
@-----. I was trying to express in
easy-to-understand (concise but accurate) language the general principle
of how transposition works --- because this query surfaces on this list
every so often. =A0 It's a basic principal on which much else is built,
and it needs to be understood as a basic principle, not as a special
case. Sometimes people get befuddled by the interaction of the 'key'
of an instrument vs. the 'key signature' on a piece of sheet music.
=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0Unhappily I _did_ lose sight of which instrument Terry
wanted to transpose, for which I apologize again. If I achieved my
goal of easy-to-understand explanation, then Terry should be able to
reverse everything and move the piano down instead of the clarinet up.
=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0If I haven't achieved this, then I will go out in my back
yard and eat some more worms. =A0 (Eating one's words is a calorically
empty act. Besides, worms taste better, I think.)
Cheers and thanks,
Bill
