This has nothing to do with Tony W's original post, but tonight I
hauled out a CD of sea shanties, and it included such non-maritime fok
songs songs as Santy Anna ("We're killing your soldiers below") and The
Drummer And The Cook.
For a moment I thought that the CD was mistitled, but then I read
the liner notes. The category of sea songs that I referred to (several
posts ago) as "foc'sle shanties" were in fact songs that the sailors
composed or sang at sea while off duty and often wishing for (or
bragging about) dry land, women, wine, their own prowess, and so forth.
So historically, some of the best known "sea songs" have nothing to do
with the ocean.

....just thought you'd like to know.
