I was doing essentially the same thing, using a Moennig bored Bb barrel on
both Bb and A. Like you, I considered the "warm-up" theory to compensate for
the fact that the barrel did not tune as well on the A.

However, last summer when I was performing the Mozart and Brahms Quintets, I
realized that the tuning on the A was not acceptable.

I finally made my own barrel for my A clarinet, with the same Moennig reverse
cone taper, but approx .004 less diameter in the bore. This kept the response
the same, the tone "Moennig barrel like" and the pitch was much, much better.

To make the barrel, I made a mold of my Moennig barrel (scary), then made
some duplicates using a urethane material. I then glued in an insert and hand
reamed it to my specifications.

I'm trying right now to duplicate the same barrel on my lathe, using cocobolo
and African Blackwood.
