I have been one of the lucky people who can use the Bb barrel (that came
with the instrument) on A clarinet. It is not as good as the barrel that
came with the A, but for making changes it works well enough that i have
learned to compensate the pitch spread which is within adjustability.
I do use a spacer on the A.(high tech design-- a shortened rubber covered
paper clip)
The Bb barrel also *can* serve as a short barrel for high pitch orchestra
days or cold rehearsal hall.
In fact, for several years i did not use the A barrel at all, until
clarinet coach suggested i try it again to see if it was more responsive.
It is slightly better in pitch and response, and i now use it when
playing mostly A clarinet parts, and definitely on Mozart Concerto or
quintet.
And now i am planning to try different barrels and may loose that
capability.... but the advantage of moving both *warmed* pieces between
clarinets may influence my new selection.
Sorry this is so long...
but trying to cover all the reasoning. 8-)
