Steph,

The main danger with any cleaner, however carefully you apply it, is that
it can easily spill over onto the pads. Depending on what kind of coverings
are on your pads, you might damage a pad enough to require its replacement.
Even when you're very careful, this can happen. When they buff the keys in a
professional shop, it's done while the instrument is disassembled and before
new pads are put into the pad cups. Additionally, some solvents can actually
remove small amounts of metal (that's how they work) and will eventually
damage whatever plating is on your keys.

I use a cloth slightly moistened with Windex (or a similar glass cleaner) -
just one quick spray onto the cloth - to wipe off keys that have
fingerprints or feel sticky - sometimes my hands sweat when I'm playing on a
very warm stage. Never spray the cleaner directly onto any part of the
clarinet. Stronger solvents, depending on what you try to use, may leave
their own residue to gum things up when they dry. Some markings on the metal
are the result of wear and will not clean up with any technique. The only
cure for those is to re-plate the keys.

Good luck.
