But for those teachers reading the list, I've been warned to make
sure the students don't solely use the legere and never learn to
tolerate, modify and appreciate the cane version. Picture the young
violin student who never learns to turn his or her own strings!
Really, I should carry a 2 1/2 legere with me for my younger students
who enjoy frustrating me to no end by arriving at their lessons
saying, "I need new reeds. I chipped my last one three days ago." Or
one of their favourite pranks: playing on a broken reed all week,
then cramming for their lesson with a brand new one and arriving at
their lesson with a water logged wet noodle and saying, "my reed is
too hard!" <sigh> Can you tell what I've been doing all morning?
