Tim, I don't mean this as confrontation or lack of sense of humor.
Since I don't know anything about brass, I'm curious if there is
something dramatically different about a French horn vs. (say) a
trumpet?

When our hornist "test fired" my french horn, he played the entire
chromatic scale (for the horn) on my horn and only had to use one valve once
for one note. Did it all with his lips and his ears. I don't know of any
instrument yhat you do this on. The horn nine tuning crooks, enough tubing
to redo my house and a fingering that is really weird compared to the other
brasswinds.
