Hi List! I've been lurking around in the shadows for awhile now, but

Welcome, Nathan.

<><> does anybody know of any music stores somewhere in the San
Francisco Bay Area that would carry lots and lots of different
mouthpieces that I could try

Well, there's always the phone book.

You can also order mouthpieces "for trial" from most mail order
houses (International Musical Suppliers, Woodwinds and Brasswinds, Muncy
Woodwinds, and so forth -- they all have web sites and toll free phone
numbers). Usually you order three mouthpieces at a time, return the
two that you like least, and keep the one that you like most. Many
people 'try out' three mouthpieces of the same model number and
manufacturer. There is plenty of variation between individual examples
of the same mouthpiece.
It costs you $5-$10 per mouthpiece plus some shipping, but usually
it's worth it.
San Francisco is much larger than my town, but one of the reasons
that the large mail order houses exist is that they can afford to stock
a much larger variety of equipment, including mouthpieces, than a local
store can. The store in my town stocks only one or two brands, and
only one or two models from each brand. So visiting a local store just
doesn't do the job.
Also, it may make sense to buy a mass-produced mouthpiece and then
send it to a craftsman who refaces it and puts the finishing touches on
it. Several of the people on this List do this. I've sent one of my
mouthpieces out for refacing just a few days ago. I'm waiting for it,
and I will be interested to play it and learn the results. It turned
out that my mouthpiece did not have precisely the measurements that it
was supposed to have.

Cheers,
Bill
