The most recent version of SmartScore produces a format called .fin, which
can be imported directly by Finale 2001 (not earlier versions). You no
longer need to use MIDI files, which preserve none of the formatting and
introduce many inaccuracies. Finale 2000 can import files directly from
MidiScan, again without intermediary MIDI files. Of the two scanning
programs, SmartScore is much faster and more accurate, and the ability of
Finale 2001 to import files from it is, to me, one of the biggest reasons
for upgrading to v.2001. It works quite well, though most dynamics and text
markings need to be re-entered once your music is in Finale. You _need_ a
good original and a good scan for this to work well.
