It's very interesting that you describe the differences between Sibelius and
Finale in that way. About five or six years ago here at the University of
Evansville, we were trying to decide which notation program to adopt for our
labs. We had a faculty committee to evaluate every one we could get our
hands on, although there have been several new ones introduced during the
intervening years, mostly at the low end of the scale. Our choice at that
time was Encore, and I used and liked this program very much.
Unfortunately, the company which developed it sold it to someone else, who
stopped supporting and upgrading it, so it seems pretty much to have gone
the way of the dinasaurs. We changed a couple of years ago to Sibelius,
although we have both that one and Finale on our computers. The
commonly-held wisdom about these programs is that Finale is usually the
standard of the music publishing industry, but it has a very steep learning
curve. It may take several months of fairly regular usage to begin to beel
that you have a pretty good command of its features. On the other hand,
Sibelius seems to share with Encore the feature of being very intuitive.
You can learn it fairly easily and quickly, even without the manual if
necessary. I find it encouraging that you feel that it is in some ways
superior to Finale.

We feel that Sibelius is the way for us to go right now, but when I use it,
I still long for the days of Encore!
