I missed the beginning of this thread. If you're looking for a very
simple notation program, you can download Finale "NotePad" for free
from their web site (http://www.codamusic.com). Very limited
features (compared to Finale 2001), but you can score music, print
it, and listen to it rendered in MIDI. My daughters enjoy it :-)
