I'd strongly recommend against any kind of adhesive - if it were meant

Wow! I'm glad I asked. The vote is unanimous against gluing.
I was told that Yamaha is now gluing their rings instead of squeezing
them on. Yet everyone advises "Don't do it."

Well, it makes sense that it could be a problem, so I won't do it
either.

Actually, the manufacturer (Howarth) has been super-cooperative
about answering maintenance questions on their web site -- about
machining the barrel and other stuff like that. I think I'll ask them
for advice again.

The ring on my instrument is symmetrical and flat-sided on both
edges and not tapered. It also looks too thick and hefty (2+ mm), and
not a soft metal such as aluminum, to be 'clamped' onto an instrument
with a force gentle enough not to mash the wood.
I've only seen one ring up close. Are they all this thick and
made of steel?

This ring has little dimples (about 20 of them) on its inside
surface that apparently were intended to grip the wood, but they're
squashed too flat now to accomplish their purpose.

Thanks again,
Bill
