Hindsight is always easier, of course; but as a photographer, I
learned to carry my equipment in the shoddiest looking bag I could find
that wasn't actually falling apart at the seams. A few photographers
go so far as to leave a baby diaper or a stained baby pajamas hanging
out of one pocket.

The problem -- of course -- is that it's fun to have a nifty, first
class bag to carry your stuff in. But to this day, I've never lost the
habit of carrying valuable stuff in a shabby bag or briefcase. I put
my clarinet into Yamaha's smallest hard case for physical protection,
and then the case fits easily into a beat up old briefcase that my Dad
gave me 20 years ago.
This drives the clerk at the music store crazy. He thinks I'm a
cheapster because I won't buy a fancy bag from him. I had to leave my
case at home one day --- grand kids and a music case with convenient
cavities that beg to be filled with something mushy are not a happy
combination --- and I brought my instrument to the store wrapped in a
hand towel inside a piece of Tupperware. The clerk looked at me with
disgust and wouldn't even talk to me that day.

Cheers,
Bill
