"Hmmmmmm...........it is sad that you have this attitude towards bands and
wind ensembles. Having played in some of the finest bands in the world, I
can say the experience can be as good as playing in an equal quality
orchestra. The literature available to the orchestra is much more rich and
diverse than for bands, but the musical experience in either can be
wonderful."

Well, I didn't mean it as severely as it apparantly came across. I have
played pieces in W.S. that I have enjoyed (including Blue Shades which I
played on tour in Europe! The the students at the University of Surrey
didn't know what to think of it!), but to me, band just doesn't hold a
candle to orchesra. I have had great experiences in both, but about 5 x's as
much from orchestra than from band.

But, all this said, I don't think my lack of excitement for band comes from
the literature (there are many wonderful pieces out there written for wind
ensemble), but from the instrumentation. I find distinctly more musical
satisfaction from playing with strings than I do with all winds. I can't
explain why this is, it's just something I feel. How many grad students
practice their tails off preparing for a professional band audition? Not too
many, since they're all going for the orchestra jobs! I admire and respect
my WS conductor, and he always picks good music. But band just doesn't
interest me anymore and I don't see it as something I want to be doing in
the future. Is that so bad? I hope not!
