Roger sez:
"Don't even get me started on if I LIKE a recital attendance policy - I'm
just the reporter in this instance."
We have the same policy at my university, although not everybody likes it. I
remember at least twice when I was required to attend recitals when I had
neither the time nor the energy to do so. I think I had to cancel a few
students in order to fulfill the requirement.
I agree fully with the statement about leading a horse to water, but
sometimes they actually *do* end up drinking. But if a student has to be
forced to attend such things, shouldn't s/he be in a different major? I go
to school with a very talented violist who didn't re-audition for the Youth
Orchestra here because she couldn't make herself go to rehearsals on
Saturdays. She was fine once she got there, but the undertaking was
something she had a hard time dealing with. I think Brahms had the same
problems with opera and marriage. I sometimes wonder why she is even a music
major. I have always been excited to go to rehearsals on Saturdays; I love
playing in a large 100+ piece orchestra!! But that's me-
