Yes, I'm aware 'prototypes' are "out", and tried
several myself at a convention booth. But my understanding
was that he did not consider them "ready" in the same
level of development as some other products.

Guy said he was aware of the problem, and
the ones he was producing for bass were in the development stage.
Whereas other products are widely tested, and developed, the
Bass reeds were not. In fact the first time I placed a phone order,
he discouraged me from trying the bass reeds right away, and suggested
I stick with the clarinet, and sax reeds.
He said he would let me know when he has
a consistent bass reed that he feels is ready, and would send
some samples. So, in that sense, I am waiting for them.

Also, I would agree with you that they do vary.
I tried many clarinet reeds, and did find variation
reed to reed, as in cane. Despite accurate dimensions,
I understand the material he is working with
apparently has a texture that can result in small variations.
