Well why in the world would you separate "technique" from "music"? I
don't - it's all the same.
HOORAY!! I've deleted Anne Satterfield's post in a similar vein,
and therefore I can't quote it, but her post summarized: "When I sit
down to play, I think about both at once. Neither one is sufficient,
and each of them affects the other."
What makes the ongoing debate so short-sighted (imo) is when people
hope to play 'musically' without having sufficient technique, or to play
'technically well' without musical feeling.
I've never heard Neil's music, but I have heard some of Tony Pay's.
To suggest that he emphasizes either technique or musicality is
ridiculous. If he did, nobody would record him in the first place.
Hopefully I would have the same response if I heard Neil's music.
I don't understand why the topic creates so much argument.
Cheers,
Bill
