To Michel Chee,

From: Stewart Kiritz

Being both a psychologist and a musician, I am not convinced that "keeping
interest" is the key variable. The child needs to be drawn to music. So if
there is music around, you go to concerts when available, play at home,
ideally have live music going on at home, the interest, if it is there, will
be reinforced. Most people I know who have music in their lives after their
childhood were self-driven and loved music, though there are a few
exceptions of kids forced to practice who appreciate it later.

I think private lessons are important, and most parents can somehow afford
them. I think scales and technique are very important, just the way
learning the abc's and basic arithmetical operations are necessary for
learning more complex verbal and quantitative skills.

Developing the ear and appreciation of music come with time when the
interest is there. Immersion in music for those who love it will yield
results.

Good Luck!
