Nancy,

I am a clarinetist in Amherst, MA, and find the same thing! My son is a
clarinet student of mine, and all I hear from him when he comes from school,
is how the other clarinetists suck. Of course, he's 14, and many things in
his life - he says - sucks. There is a certain bit of truth to the fact
that many young musicians, particularly in the public and private schools in
United States, have YET to study the instrument privately, and detest the
diligence and perseverence required to develop an appreciation and liking of
the instrument; that goes for the necessary discipline for all musical
instruments.

My wife, my son, and I are in the Amherst Community Band, and there are
never enough musicians, let alone, clarinetists. Often, there will be an
abundance of one or two instruments (ie trumpet or percussionists) On
occasion, we've had four euphonium players and no flutes, four
percussionists, and no trombones. clarinetists, however, we've never had
more than 6!

Clarinet IS a difficult instrument to establish an enjoyable level of
playing on, and my theory is that until a clarinet student reaches a level
of enjoyment of the instrument, there will be many-a-quitter!

Sincerly,
Doug Benoit

Subject: [kl] Community bands and clarinets

I play in two community bands and two orchestras. In Band A we have a full
complement of clarinets, but would not turn away any more who wished to
play, at this time. In Band B, I am the designated Eb player, BUT, since I
double on all the woodwinds, I find myself constantly carrying 5 or 6
different instruments to each rehearsal. In the two orchestras, I am the
principal in A and the asst. principal in the B. Each group has 4 clarinets
and we hire out if we need more. Most of the other community bands in the
area do have problems filling the clarinet sections. For the life of me, I
can't understand why, as this is such a musically rich area (greater
Baltimore-Washington, D.C.area).
