Subj: [kl] community bands & clarinetists
Date: Tue, 2 Jan 2001 00:45:11 -0500

This is a curiosity question: Are community bands and their equivalents =
in other parts of the country/world (I'm in Kansas City, Missouri, USA) =
having a hard time getting sufficient numbers of clarinetists? =20

I play in three community groups and all three are suffering from serious =
shortages of clarinetists (plain garden variety Bb's, we're not even =
beginning to worry about the harmony clarinets), plus I've been recruited =
either directly or indirectly by three other local groups (obviously, they =
are truly desperate :-). Given the number of clarinetists that start in =
grade school, I (and the directors of these groups) find it astounding =
that even one of the groups could be running at or below the bare minimum =
for the size of the group. I assume this is just a quirk of statistics =
here in KC that will reverse in a year or two, but (as noted) I'm curious. =
