Neil, I can relate very strongly to your comments. I find it impossible not
to hear/listen to sounds within my "aural atmosphere." This includes sounds
I would much rather not hear, including elevator unmusic, rap from a passing
car, the neighbor's portable radio playing in the yard, and the myriad sounds
of our hyper-noisy times. I think part of it is a result of years of
training oneself to _listen_ to music; it's almost impossible _not_ to
listen. I'm finding foam earplugs useful in more and more situations. Frank
