Brooks Smith seems to have been every good soloist's accompanist of choice.
I have many recordings on which he is the accompanist. Many years ago I
heard him give his philpsophy of the art of accompaniment. (He also wrote
on the subject.) He was dedicated to it.

In 1970 or 71 I heard him accompany an aging Shwarzkopf in recital at the
Academy of Music. I mean no insult to her when I say that Smith's playing
made her sound better. (And, yes, I know her political background.)
