Thanks, Annie. I never really found out who Peplowski was -- I think he
was a saxophone player.

The other dude was Bateson.

Can I just say one thing about his ideas that you'll almost certainly
recognise?

Bateson talked about two worlds, the Newtonian world of things and
impacts, and the communicative world, in which 'a difference makes a
difference.'

Now, if you say to your student that music isn't really best thought of
as notes, but as *intervals*, then you're immediately in Bateson's
communicative world. Because an interval is the simplest example of the
difference between two notes. And that difference, that does indeed
'make a difference', doesn't exist anywhere in the Newtonian objective
world. It's something that *we* bring to it. It exists not in the
world of things, but in the world of relationships between things
-- where all the rest of music lives too.

Nielsen famously said that intervals were the soul of music, and you can
really see that in the concerto he wrote for us. It might even be
almost the most important thing you could say to someone preparing to
play it.
