Hello David,

I was also in Air Force Bands from 1971 to 1980. I was stationed at Warner
Robins, Clark AFB Phillipines, and Langley. During that time I was a
drummer. I kept my Clarinet playing a secret. During your years at Wright
Patterson did you know a Carl Kranz. I know that he was forced out
eventually, but I'm not sure when. Also, was Capt. Shelton your band
commander at any time.

Tony-

I served with the 661st Air Force Band (aka the Air Force Band of Flight)
between 1984 and 1989. At that time, there were 20 US Air Force
Bands worldwide, including the 2 special bands: the USAF Band in Washington
DC and the USAF Academy Band at the USAF Academy
(now the US Space Command Band at Peterson AFB, Colorado, US).

Beginning in approximately late 1987/early 1988, the US Air Force began
eliminating several of the smaller bands, and reorganizing the entire
career field. Today, there are only 12 USAF Bands worldwide. Each band
had
an average of 4-6 clarinetists. It's not hard to do the math. On
the positive side, the USAF Band Program does attract musicians of higher
caliber-most with college degrees, or at the very least several years
of college. Unless high school graduates are absolutely outstanding, most
high school graduates will simply not qualify for an Air Force Band. In
my years at Wright-Patterson, I know of only one high school graduate
accepted into the program, and he was eventually transferred to a new
career
field because he could not keep up with the rest of the clarinetists.

While there may have been reductions in the number of Army and Marine
Bands,
musicians in the Army and Marines are considered combat troops first,
and musicians second, so there are more opportunities. In addition,
musicians in all US military branches-except the Air Force and Coast Guard
(1 band
only)-must spend up to 6 months in the Armed Forces School of Music in
Norfolk, Virginia.

Danny,
Think about an Air Force band. I say this even tho` I`m from U.K. The
defence forces of the future, as seen in the U.K all point towards the
<higher tech> services, i.e. air primarily. Sixty U.K. army bands all
disappeared 6/7 years ago. The Army now has only 40. Whereas all our air
force bands have remained intact, plus they seem to attract a more
proficient kind of musician. Most straight from college. What I`m saying
is,
could the U.S. defences move in similar directions at sometime in the
future, thus causing you to change direction in a career you thought was
going to be secure.
I could be talking thru` my a - - h - - - of course. But it might be an
angle you have not, as yet thought about, and which might just require a
small amount of thought.

And get your hair cropped, you `orrible little musician!!!
The very best of luck to you.
Tony W.
