I have to tell you, I don't believe the Army band line bands or the special
bands have changed much since I auditioned 22 years ago, I know they haven't
since I've retired. I would say this: Don't play anything that isn't Weber!!!
Personally, I used Concertino, and I played it faster than I would for an
audience and I articulated more than I thought musically. If you're taking
the U. S. Army Field band audition, Concertino and the Mozart concerto are
part
of the required selections. This is the funny thing about choosing a piece
for a military audition. This piece will tell the committee what your week
part of your playing is. If someone played a brahms sonata, the committee
would assume the person didn't want to articulate, hence the rep asked would
be the a lot of the fast articulation pieces. Auditioning for a special band
you will have 1-2 really good clarinet players on the audition, but you will
end up with a few people of limited musical resourses,(nicely worded I
think), mostly officers. So stay away from esoteric rep. That means no
Messian!!! Neilson only if you can really kick ass on it! If it were me Weber
1rst would be my choice.
