There's been a little discussion of Chinese music/movies in the past few
days. May I recommend one of the finest movies made (IMHO) ? It's "To Live",
directed by Zhang Yimou, 1994. The music is integral wiuth the movie - the
1st half has wonderful examples of Pi Ying Xi, Chinese Shadow Play and the
2nd half the communist Mass Songs. I noticed while I was doing a little
research (I couldn't remember the name of the movie - it's the years
creeping up on me) that it's used in World Music classes at a number of
universities.

The movie is wonderful, but very very sad. The subtitles don't get in the
way - the actors are so good that you can understand the themes without the
subtitles.

My wife picks up foreign language films "hit or miss" at the library. This
one was a winner for the whole family (11 year old & up).
