When I graduated from Oberlin back in 1969, we not only were forced to
have written receipts from recitals, but also had to attend chapel at
least 10 times a semester. Now chapel wasn't a religious or spiritual
experience. They just had the guest speakers in Finney Chapel at
Oberlin. And some of the speakers were rather unique. One Thursday we
had John Wayne. He came out with a flower and said, "The sky is blue,
the grass is green, so get off your butts and join the Marines."
Everybody burst into laughter, most of us dressed in dirty sweat shirts
with holes, and the guys had hair as long as they could grow it. He
decided to take a "question & answer" approach. Some indignant young
lady asked, "Mr. Wayne, how do you feel about the Women's Lib movement?"
John said, "Well, I think it's just wonderful as long as I get my supper
on time". You had to be there. He was very funny and lovable.
Anyhow, had I not been forced to go to chapel, I never would have
seen John Wayne. I didn't care how awesome the speakers were. I just
didn't want to walk all the way over to Finney Chapel to hear some
ambassador talk about the government. I went to the recitals
voluntarily, but if we hadn't been forced to stay, I would have tried to
"escape" if they got too boring. After Sophomore year I didn't dare even
think about escaping. My grade point average was so low that I couldn't
take any chances.
Now that it's all over, I'm very glad that I was able to fulfill
the "attendance" requirement for graduation. ANNIE
