I can't think of anything meaningful to say about this right now,
except that the distinction _is_ significant IMO and it should be
recognized more explicitly than often it is --- and this includes when
discussing a performer's "responsibility" to the audience.
I remember when I first subscribed to this list, and in my naivete,
I posted something about people who want to perform vs. people who are
"lone pipers and want to wander through the countryside playing to
themselves" (or something like that). This distinction seemed like a
major issue to me then, and it still does.
Another interesting thought is that performance is sometimes a
necessity simply because there can be more pleasure in playing with
others than in playing alone, and the stage brings people together ---
in hopes of earning a living if for no other reason --- who otherwise
wouldn't meet.

Okay, since you told me not to ask, what is wrong (or right?) about
a recital attendance policy?

Cheers,
Bill
