I must admit to some surprise at your response, Roger. (below)

Having observed the "discussion" on this subject over some weeks,
interspersed with a lot of extraneous material, I sought to distil the
essential points from the fluff and flummery so that I could understand the
argument - at least sufficient to allow me to phrase some sensible questions
and hopefully learn from those who apparently "know".

I don't have the musical education and experience that many others have.
Indeed, I am a relative novice to reading music, and clarinet playing.
Essentially, I am still attempting to master technique in order to play the
notes in the right sequence at the indicated tempo. Concerns for musical
expression tend to take a back-seat - perhaps erroneously so.

So, in this context, I didn't expect to receive a gratuitous homily, laced
with sarcastic references to another's alleged obsessive behaviours, ego,
power and the like.

Nor did I expect to find that elsewhere today, someone else might consider
my initial post as suggestive of the "intellectual" and perhaps therefore,
implicitly unworthy.

I was under the impression that the educators and clarinet professionals on
this list prided themselves on being instructive and helpful if others
genuinely sought information about our mutual interest. It is surprising to
realise that this may not be so.

Thanks to Bill Wright for confirming that his understanding of the
discussion more or less paralleled my outline.

>Have I misunderstood?

.................just the part where the one party tells everyone else that
they aren't right. I wouldn't call it a disagreement; I would call it an
obsession on that person's part! Obsession to be the king, the big cheese,
the head honcho, the number one guy, the all important, the uno numero, the
big guy, the top gun, the omnipotent..........!!! LOL I actually find the
time spent vehemently arguing against technique as redundantly stupid -
almost like arguing against gasoline when you own a Jaguar, or arguing for
recycling paper and then buying Pampers..........

1 dimensional thinking.....perhaps 2 dimensional. Now I have no problem
with 1 or 2 dimensional thinking - we have to deal with these kinds of
jokers all the time - but give one a gun and watch out!

For the most part, I have no problem with musicality being the end goal -
why shouldn't it be? But the silliness and wasted time stating that
effortless technique is bxxxxxxx or vulture vxxxx is really what defines
the absurdity that you are incredulously seeing.

Bravo bravo! You are beginning to understand!

Sincerely,
Roger Garret
