I had the same thought myself, which shows once again that music
can be a universal language which can transcend societal barriers.
Actually the CD liner on his Christmas album says "New Orleans Christmas
jazz", and so if you toss in the word 'Klezmer', you have quite a mix.

His tone is.... 'raspy' is the best word I can think of, but it's
not tongue flutter or growling or anything like that. As I just posted
a moment ago about the 'reed above' embouchure, crossing boundaries can
be a good thing. One of Pearson's points is that an art form loses
when everybody converges on the same ideal. I suppose that this is the
reverse side of the coin that we've already discussed about honoring the
composer's intent (as it is perceived today) vs. improvising on the
music as in jazz.
