If you are new to the clarinet, there are possibly other things that
could use some attention, things that you might not be able to detect.
This is particularly true when buying into something used.

I purchased a used clarinet, and after a month or so, I decided to
take it to a repairman who is now retired but who is well respected in
the community and who is sought out by those who know of him. He
allowed me to watch over his shoulder as he worked. I was caught off
guard by how many things can be adjusted on a clarinet (and machined in
my case) that the beginner doesn't even know are there.
If you decide that you want to do some of your own maintenance, but
I'm convinced that you should watch a knowledgeable technician do it
first, with your own eyes. Otherwise, as Richard says, you won't have
any idea of the things that you should've done but didn't know about.

Cheers,
Bill
