William,
There is no such thing as a "Klezmer tone". Might
you mean all those wonderful other sounds and
ornaments that we Klezmorim do? I us a standard
symphony setup with a VD#4.5 reed. The "tone" comes
from a concept of 'singing' rather than just
'playing'. The whole approach of a folk musician to
tone is to sound like a voice, with all it's swoops,
etc. NOT TO SOUND "PERFECT" AND UNBLEMISHED!! (such as
in so-called 'serious music'). In Klezmer, we are
trying to sound like the synagogue Kantor or just
someone praying - full of emotion and verve but not
worrying about "nice" tone.
