Since everybody else is sharing their holiday greetings, I might as well
pass on the one I wrote to all of my friends a couple days ago. Since I
wrote, we've actually had some fog and cool weather (lows in the low 50's
perhaps):

*******

Ah yes, it is now December 17. We are just about a week from Christmas. I
hope everybody is doing well. To those I haven't written to for awhile:
Sorry...

This morning I went for a bicycle ride. Normally this wouldn't be such an
unusual event except for this is the 1st time in about 4 months that I've
been able to ride. (For those that didn't know, I broke my arm in August
and it is [finally] healed) It really felt great to be out again.

On my ride I was reminded about all the things that make Los Angeles what it
is. If you've seen the Steve Martin movie "LA Story," real life here isn't
very different. It is about 72 degrees outside right now. Highs will be a
few degrees warmer. There is a light breeze and a few wisps of clouds in
the sky. I can't see the air I'm breathing, but I can see mountains that
are 40-50 miles away. It is absolutely perfect...

It was crowded along the beach this morning where I took my ride. LA was
out en masse... Some things I saw: huge waves, palm trees, sand, you
know... the usual. People were playing beach volleyball (men in long
shorts, women in bikinis), surfers, bicyclists in spandex, families out on
their morning roller blade ride.

Oh, the cellular phones (of course) were everywhere, too. (This is LA after
all.) You think the drivers with cell phones are bad, just wait until you
see the bicyclists with one hand on the bars and the other to their ear with
a phone-- holding a conversation.

The crowning scene though, was at the sand dunes along part of the beach.
As we all know, kids in locations that actually have a winter enjoy
activities such as sledding, building snowmen, etc... Who says you can't
enjoy those same activities when it is 72 degrees and sunny?! I saw a group
of kids at the dunes with plastic sleds and dishes out sledding down the
sand dunes. Another kid had a boogie board and was "surfing" down the
dunes! Oh I wish I had a camera...

This afternoon, I am going to try to finish my Christmas shopping while
going to one of our many outdoor malls. Hey, it is a great day to be
outside.

Happy Holidays all!
