of the large mail order houses in the US (such as Muncy, International,
Woodwind and Brasswind, and so forth -- they all have web sites) will
ship mouthpieces and also instruments to you on trial. This means that
if you don't like any or all of them, you can return them. This
service costs a few dollars in freight and a restocking fee
(approximately $5 for mouthpieces), but I agree totally with the advice
to try before you buy.
I don't know if (or how) your being in Australia affects this
policy, but I think that all of them ship internationally as well.

To use myself as an example, I ordered three mouthpieces of the
same model and manufacturer (I did this at my instructor's insistence,
it seemed like a bad idea to me at first). One of the three
mouthpieces suited me very much better than the other two, and so I kept
it and returned the others.

I should also mention that there at least four respected mouthpiece
manufacturers who post on this list: (in alphabetical order) Clark
Fobes, Roger Garrett, Walter Grabner, and Gregory Smith. I hope my
mind hasn't gone blank and left a list-member out. I've only played
the mouthpieces of one of these four gentlemen, and so I can't compare
their products; but I will tell you that I am _so much happier_ with a
non-mass-produced mouthpiece. I still have a B45 and a 5RV and one or
two others whose names I don't even remember sitting in my drawer, and
they'll probably sit there unused for a long, long time.
