I've found it matters a lot. Kalmen Opperman taught me to make reeds very
slightly narrower than the outside of the side rails -- maybe the width of a
thin pencil line. You set the reed even with the edge of one rail, hold the
reed on with your thumb and give a few toots; then jog the reed a tiny bit
toward the opposite rail. As you keep going, you will hit a dramatically
more resonant position, which you hold while you put the ligature on. The
difference is not subtle.
