Subj: [kl] Zoon vs Baker - an observation
Date: Sat, 23 Dec 2000 06:33:30 -0500

We have Victoria Soames here in U.K. She is our current "flavour of the
month". I saw her play in a crappy Johann Strauss Touring Theatre show. My
eyesight is none too 20/20 so I didn`t immediately recognise her. Then when
I saw her name in the programme, <and> after seeing her, and hearing her
play at the Royal College, I couldn`t understand why she had "stooped" so
low as to be part of that touring company. She can play - take it from me.
But then everyone has to make a living don`t they?! It seems to me that a
lot of young players fresh out of college are deliberately avoiding the
symphony orchestra way. They are finding more satisfaction in the numerous
other outlets of career opportunities. Is it my observation that sym. orch.
can be quite boringly repetitive in their repertoire, give or take the
occasional new commission. We saw on TV that one principal here, when asking
for a co-principal, was refused, as a result of which he left to take up a
solo career. Are symphony ochestras dying?

Please look at Victoria Soames web site, and the amount of music she can
handle competently.
