I once put the more modern type of mothballs (para-dichlorobenzene) in a case
with a wooden clarinet with nickel-plated keys, and there was no visible
damage after a year. However, it took a _long_ time, maybe another year,
before the smell was completely gone, so I'd advise against it. You could use
a tightly closed plastic bag to keep bugs from getting in.
