I did pull the barrel out the other night, so that helped!

If you want a more permanent change, you can buy barrels of
different lengths. One reason for doing this is intonation, but
barrels are also available with different interior shapes which change
your tone as well. Skilled clarinetists (I'm not one, just so you
know) sometimes carry several different barrels with them so that they
can adapt on-the-spot to unexpected situations.

<><> Is the Vandoren B45 made from hard rubber vs the plastic on
the Yamaha? Just curious...

I started out on a YCL20 myself, and I once posted here that the 4C
was plastic, and someone else replied that they thought it was rubber,
not plastic. I never investigated this, so I don't know the correct
answer.

The B45 is certainly hard rubber. I used to play on a B45, but I
squeaked more often than a beginner should. Although I didn't
recognize the fact at the time, my tone was 'shrieky' even when I wasn't
squeaking --- too many higher partials. One day my teacher asked to
play my mouthpiece. She could play it without squeaking, but also she
could make it squeak or shriek with minimal effort. She told me, "I
wouldn't hassle with this any longer if I were you. You should buy a
different mouthpiece." So I purchased a mouthpiece from one of the
mouthpiece makers on this list, and I am grateful that I did.

Cheers,
Bill
