Neil Leupold reported:

<<<I got the impression that the Zoon to which GT Gallant was referring was
a non-classical artist, perhaps jazz, folk , or new-age. What I found via a
quick Google search was a bio of an accomplished classical flutist who,
while not possessed of Baker's legendary status, is no slouch himself. He's
Principal Flute of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among other things. Oh,
what would the flute-m list members think of us Klarinetters for not knowing
this! :-)>>>

Shame on me.

Of course, what we folks were reacting to wasn't gtg's preference for Mr.
Zoon -- for all we know, it's entirely possible that he IS a "better" flute
player than Mr. Baker, whatever that could possibly mean -- but the
disrespect for Mr. Baker's abilities. [We should also keep in mind that it
wasn't Mr. Zoon that did the disrespecting; Zoon v. Baker isn't a Celebrity
Death Match.]

What ticks me off about Mr. Zoon is the fact that he is younger than I am.
I've gotten used to entire leagues of sports figures being younger than me,
then young enough to be my children -- now I have to put up with new icons
of musicianship of a tender age?

I know, I know, Ricardo is only X years old. Well, I have reeds older than
that! Bah humbug.

gtg noted:

<<<I, like DH, wasn't going to reply to this gross, blown out of proportion,
put words in my mouth, misinterpretation of my email I sent out about the
great Julius Baker (who I happen to love, just not as much as Jaques Zoon).
Zoon is considered by many to be the greatest flutist out there today . . .
Please let me know if I ever said Baker sucked, or I didn't like him... or,
great technique doesn't matter. I'm sure I didn't write anything between
the lines. Maybe too much eggnog on your part!>>>

I'm terribly sorry if I misinterpreted your intent, but your actual post
stated that Julius Baker

<<<. . . and his clones phrase like metronomes also! Technical perfection
is only great when it's used as a tool to express something musical.

So therefore, I graciously disagree about Baker being one of the best wind
virtuosos. To me, that would
mean having it all: style, ample technique, taste, musicianship, ears,
flexibility, etc. That's not to say I don't appreciate a technical freak
every so often, just as long as they aren't boring! Give me Zoon any day...
missed notes and all. Only my opinion. :)>>>

To be sure, you did not say that Julius Baker "sucked." What we read were
your own words stating that, in your opinion, Mr. Baker and/or his "clones":

-- "phrases like [a] metronome";

-- does *not* have all of "style, ample technique, taste, musicianship,
ears, flexibility, etc.";

-- is a "technical freak"; and

-- is "boring."

Again, if I jumped to a conclusion, please forgive me. But it's certainly
reasonable how a person could take this the wrong way.

Then there was that 10 year old who played at the last Clarinetfest in
Oklahoma (the name escapes me). I'd be delighted if I could play as good as
he can ...

Due to having to leave on an overnight trip Sunday after church (and then
getting stranded ANOTHER night due to snow -- I hate winter!), I was not
able
to let you know how I did. It went OK -- I did make a couple of mistakes,
but I don't think anyone noticed. I practiced with different reeds, and
found one I could live with. (It seems that the reeds which play the
easiest don't sound as good, but that could just be my personal preference
in
sound.) Anyway, thanks for your help both this time and other times.

I'm also using a Cordier, which I've had for about 20 years. Perhaps a dull
Cordier still cuts cane easily but has tougher going on plastic?

G'day all,

Just bought myself a Mark VI alto for Christmas. The
most surprising part of my purchase is that I didn't
have to win the lottery to get it. If you are sitting
down I will tell you the price:

In Australian Dollars $1000.00!!!!!(At the present
currency exchange that makes US$552.90)!

The guy I bought it from bought it about 7 years ago
and never took it out of it's case. It has been
sitting in his garage for that time. It is is good
condition but because it hasn't been touched for that
period it does need a little work to get it back to
pristine condition.

It's serial number is: M182921

Although I know it's history (It was bought by the Air
Force Band new and he bought it at auction when the
band replaced it with a Super Action 80) i don't know
it's age etc. I have been told that some information
can be gained from it's serial number. If that is so
and someone could fill me in I would appreciate any
help.

Anyway, enough bragging for now. I hope you all have a
truely wonderful and blessed Christmas.

God Bless,

Rod

One wonders, and hopes, if he himself would have the courage to stand up to

Your fear might be well-founded. The BBC, some years ago, decided to clean
house and trashed many hours of the early Dr. Who series videos, only to
regret it later since they're making out very well from the sales of the
remaining shows.

Hello everyone, I am new to the list, and very green. I have no idea what
most of you are talking about with regard to technicalities, but have a
question nonetheless.

I only started playing the clarinet last year (am 35ys old) and have an old
Buffet Crampon Evette (wood) with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece. My question is
this: My daughter is learning clarinet at school on a Yamaha YCL20 with I
think a 4C mouthpiece. Playing with her, mine sounds a bit flat. I also
have a Signet Special which sounds sharper with its Goldentone 3 mouthpiece,
and decidedly deeper in tone with the Vandoren. Obviously you can't be
definitive without hearing them, but is it more likely differences with the
mouthpieces than the length of my barrel? I have a Duke Ellington CD that I
play along with, and don't feel that my Evette is flat with it.... Any
suggestions? At what stage should I upgrade my daughter's mouthpiece if it
makes such a difference to the tone and depth of sound?

BTW, we don't have marching bands here in Australia like they do in the
States. School band is not in the same league here I don't think......

Also, is it a good idea to get a Leghere (sp?) reed for both my daughter and
I? I would imagine they would be more durable for a nearly 11 year old to
cart to school? (My 7 year old son wants to play too!)

Unfortunately I am unable to afford regular lessons and have not played much
this year due to ill health, but am trying to get myself going again. I
really enjoy it when I do play!

Sorry, enough of my waffle. Any input would be appreciated....

Kerry Masterman.

Hello. If you are comparing your intonation on your instrument
against your daughter's intonation on her instrument, you should not
draw any conclusions about the instruments from this. Most likely the
differences between your and her embouchures, breath, tongue position,
etc will have more effect than differences between the instruments will.
It would be more meaningful to compare the same person playing the
same written notes on both instruments; but even if one instrument
sounds flat or sharp, it's still a fact that each of us is better
suited to some instruments than to others. Blaming the instrument
alone is not useful. For example, if you were bowling with an 20-lb
ball (I'm assuming that bowling is a common sport in Australia?), would
you blame the ball if your daughter couldn't bowl as well with it, or
would you recommend that she use a lighter ball?
Given that the ear is influenced by so many factors, you should use
a tuner to check intonation. They can be purchased for $20-$25 (US).
In general, Yamaha Y2CL is a good student instrument, but there are
better mouthpieces than what comes with any student clarinet, including
Yamaha's 4C.
When you are playing with your daughter and the two of you are not
in tune, whoever is sharp can pull her barrel out just a little bit.

Cheers,
Bill
