Hello everyone, I am new to the list, and very green. I have no idea what
most of you are talking about with regard to technicalities, but have a
question nonetheless.

I only started playing the clarinet last year (am 35ys old) and have an old
Buffet Crampon Evette (wood) with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece. My question is
this: My daughter is learning clarinet at school on a Yamaha YCL20 with I
think a 4C mouthpiece. Playing with her, mine sounds a bit flat. I also
have a Signet Special which sounds sharper with its Goldentone 3 mouthpiece,
and decidedly deeper in tone with the Vandoren. Obviously you can't be
definitive without hearing them, but is it more likely differences with the
mouthpieces than the length of my barrel? I have a Duke Ellington CD that I
play along with, and don't feel that my Evette is flat with it.... Any
suggestions? At what stage should I upgrade my daughter's mouthpiece if it
makes such a difference to the tone and depth of sound?

BTW, we don't have marching bands here in Australia like they do in the
States. School band is not in the same league here I don't think......

Also, is it a good idea to get a Leghere (sp?) reed for both my daughter and
I? I would imagine they would be more durable for a nearly 11 year old to
cart to school? (My 7 year old son wants to play too!)

Unfortunately I am unable to afford regular lessons and have not played much
this year due to ill health, but am trying to get myself going again. I
really enjoy it when I do play!

Sorry, enough of my waffle. Any input would be appreciated....

Kerry Masterman.
