Neil Leupold noted:

<<<Nothing in what [David Hattner has] written below provides verifiable
proof that [Wlach] was a member of the Nazi party, or that his actions were
reflections of direct support for Hitler and Nazi ideology. What is clear
from your examples, i.e.; doing the math, is that he was antisemitic.
Antisemitism does not make some-body a Nazi, even during the Nazi era.>>>

Of course, it doesn't make me like him any more. I will note, though, that
from an historian's perspective the letter from Mrs. Jettel stating his SS
affiliation -- while certainly not the same level of evidence as his SS ID
card -- is a fairly decent historical artifact. It's hearsay, of course,
but hearsay of a person who obviously knew the subject well.

<<<Additional discussion about Wlach's affiliation in this context would be
valuable (although perhaps better offline).>>>

I disagree, but only to the extent that it would be better offline. While
not our usual chipper repartee, the historical question of Wlach's
affiliation is certainly within the realm of clarinet-related scholarship,
and therefore squarely within the purview of our list.

Besides, I'm interested.

David Hattner notes:

<<<In any case, before the anschluss, there were 25 or so members of the
VSOO/VPO who were Jewish, including the concertmaster. All were expelled and
many died in concentration camps. It's a chapter in the orchestra's history
that is often conveniently overlooked.>>>

. . . and it shouldn't be.
