I think the difference is like the difference between just being a
garden-variety bigot and being a card-carrying, cross-burning, lynch-mob
running white-sheeted Klansman. Both are wrong, but it is a matter of
degree. Actually, as I read it, if Wlach was a true Nazi SS member,
instead of urging his colleague to turn his wife in, he would have done it
HIMSELF. Unless maybe he didn't have the necessary chutzpah.
