I believe that the boiling water technique is intended as a method for
softening the reed 1/4 to 1/2 strength, not as a method for "breaking in" a
Legere. I've never broken in a Legere as i do cane reeds--i just use them.
I've not noticed any degredation in the quality of the reed over time
(although i do notice the softening after i've played it for a while).

I have used the boiling water technique for softening the Legeres--it does
work quite well. One second in enough to do it. I've used water about
1/2" deep in a coffee mug, heated in a microwave.
