We never ever finished this conversations of -- was it, 2 years ago? --
did we, Richard? It got more complicated than you thought the list
would be interested in.

Alright, here is a simpler argument to undermine the notion of a
'forked' fingering being uniquely characterisable, let alone 'true' or
'acoustically correct'.

B'' in the clarion register is vented by the small key attached to the
rings of the LH, slightly less than a semitone lower. But A'' has a
(usually closed) semitone hole below it, and is vented by the G hole, a
*tone* lower. Does this closed hole make the fingering count as
open/closed/open, and thus 'forked'? If not, why not?

Similarly E' and D' in the clarion register. There is a closed Eb key
below the E', and a closed C# key below the D. Do these closed holes
make the fingering count as open/closed/open, and thus 'forked'? If
not, why not?

In the case of the 'forked' F#, what is being vented is actually the
whole of the left hand tube plus the ring operated spatula key above the
RH first finger. This tube length produces a sharp F#, which gets
flattened by the 2nd right hand finger so that it's in tune, true.

But you could equally argue that the 'true' E fingering would have the
Eb key open, and it's brought in tune by the Eb key being closed.

If you say that the middle finger F# fingering is an acoustical
compromise, you have to admit that *all* fingerings are an acoustical
compromise, even if some are better compromises than others.
