David, I am soon going to be convinced that you have no sense of humor.
The remark made was that the person thought that Wlach had "croaked."
So I said, "Watch your language. He many have squeaked, but he never
croaked!" See? Squeak. Croak.

But I did not know that Wlach was a Nazi. I should tell you that I
wrote a story that was published and that dealt with the President of
the Vienna Phil. (and also first bassoon) who was a righteous man and
who quit his position rather than tolerate the political abuses that
were going on with that orchestra at that time. Except for his decency,
the Vienna Phil. did contain a great many Nazis, but I did not know that
Wlach was one of them. Actually the story was published in two
magazines, one of them was the double reed journal, and I gave them the
story without fee because I was so impressed with the courage of the man
in question. His name was Hugo Burghauser and he eventually became 1st
bassoon in Toronto and, later, 1st in the NBC and 2nd in the Met. Opera
orchestra. I met him one night when I was playing Elektra at the Met in
the early 1960s and he came to watch the performance by sitting in the
pit. He was retired by that time.

Got it? Squeak. Croak. It is supposed to have been hilariously funny.
