<heh!> This afternoon the folks at Norton's support desk were sort
of boggled that someone would install their (Norton's) software on a
machine that lacked a telephone connection. It turns out that if you
don't do the install exactly right under these conditions, Norton and
Windows team up and freeze your machine rather than complaining "Hey!
Where's the phone connection?" Just answering questions such as "Do
you want to get our online update?" with a "No" is not enough.
At one point, the fellow spluttered and asked me, "If you're not
connected to the Internet.... why do you want a computer?"
At the time, I was feeling stupid for not 'understanding' the
issues; but if you think about it, it becomes clear how strong the
pressures are these days to fall in line with the "I'm more connected
than you are" mentality. In my day, the big dilemma was kids glued to
TVs or walking down the street with earphones in their ears and
oblivious to the 'real world'. Now it's a different sort of
connection; but it's the same issue, I suppose.
I hope that I haven't offended anyone by saying so.

Cheers,
Bill
