Subj: [kl] Jury duty
Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2000 17:11:28 -0500

Well, today I had my end o semester jury. What fun! I played the Cahuzac
piece "Variations sur un Air Du Pays D'oc". During my last lesson this
semester Mr. kitt suggested that I play this piece instead of premier
rhapsody, it was thought that the Cahuzac had more comic value, for a day of
undergrad jury duty. I laid on the speed and the schmaltz!. But the real
kicker was, I got to the jury later than I had hoped to (I was over at the
field band delivering some mouthpieces that I had made). My reed was kinda
dry, the hall was a little cold, so I put on the legere, and set it on stun.
I have not been all that excited about these on clarinet, on my mark6 alto
with a meyer 5 they kick ass. but I figured go for. The panel didn't realize
I was playing plastic until one of the members told them, after I got
critique sheets. Mr. Kitts wrote of my sound quality "Much improved". Part of
that is the reed, most of that is adjusting the concept of sound from Army
band playing into orchestral playing. I must admit the Cahuzac is one of
those pieces I think that tone and sound quality is secondary to razzle
dazzle and hot-dog quality, but what the heck, I was making an artistic
statement. So I had fun, played a plastic reed in public, we laughed, we
cried. Oh Mr. Kitt did sugest that I should think about NOT using the double
high C at the end of the piece. OK, so sometimes I do listen to advice.

Tom Puwalski, the artist formerly known as sarge, and one final away from the
end of his first semester as a full time music student who thinks he did
pretty good on his Math 110 final yesterday
